Shingles is a short-lived viral infection of the nervous system that starts with fatigue, fever, chills and intestinal upset. The affected skin areas become sensitive and prone to blistering. One attack usually provides immunity for life. However, for many people, particularly the elderly, pain can persist for months, even years.
